DIY: Dream Catcher Garland

So, earlier this year, I discovered one of the coolest sites: U lala. They're an incredible blogging site for college-age girls, and they focus on a message of "style, substance and spirit", providing a more positive, creative media platform for a demographic almost constantly bombarded by little other than celebrity gossip and negativity.

I fell in love with their site, and immediately applied to write for them, becoming the first international/non-US blogger on the site. For my first post, I put together a tutorial on how to make your own dream catcher garland, using some basic supplies and recycling some old bangles. Keep reading below to see how. (Note: post is image heavy, but super descriptive!)

The supplies you'll need:
  • Old metal bangles (those thin, stackable ones)
  • Embroidery thread (about 1.5m per dream catcher)
  • Thin silver cord (about 1.5m per dream catcher)
  • Thicker silver cord
  • Beads
  • Feathers
  1. Tie a knot in your embroidery thread and glue it down at what will be the top of your hoop. Use the remainder of the thread to wrap your hoop, adding small amounts of glue to secure while wrapping.
  2. Continue wrapping the thread around the bangle, until you reach the original knot. Secure with another knot, beside the original one, and secure with some glue.
  3. Knot the thin silver cord around the hoop, a small distance from the original knot. Secure with some glue.

  4. Knot the cord again, and then cut off the remainder of the cord. Put a small amount of glue on the cut end to stop the cord unraveling.
  5.  Knot the cord again on the other side of the original knot, using a small amount of glue to secure it.
  6. Continue knotting the cord around the hoop periodically, until reaching the last knot before the original silver knot.
  7. After knotting all away around the hoop, knot the cord in the middle of the first loop. Continue knotting the cord inside every loop.

  8. To add a bead to your dream catcher, simply thread a bead onto the silver cord in between knots and continue knotting as usual.

  9. When the dream catcher has reached the size you'd like, secure the cord with a double knot, cutting off the excess cord and securing with a spot of glue.
  10. Repeat this process, making as many dream catchers as you'd like for your garland. Decorate your dream catchers with beads and feathers.
  11. Tie the dream catchers onto the thicker silver cord, adding beads between to decorate.

Be sure to check out U lala, and let me know if you have a go at making your own dream catcher garland!
